Overview

Jiquilisco Bay is one of Central America's most important wildlife corridors — a stopover for millions of migratory birds and a year-round home to crocodiles, sea turtles, howler monkeys, and over 300 bird species. This dedicated wildlife tour is led by a certified ornithologist who knows exactly where to look, when to be quiet, and how to get you close without disturbing the animals. Bring your binoculars and your patience — the rewards are extraordinary.

Itinerary

What to Expect

  1. 1

    Pre-Dawn Departure

Meet at Puerto Parada at 5:30 AM. Your ornithologist guide briefs the group on target species for the day, migration patterns, and observation etiquette.

  2. 2

    Shoreline & Mudflat Survey

Begin along the bay shoreline where wading birds — herons, egrets, ibis, and spoonbills — feed in the shallows. Shorebirds concentrate here during migration.

  3. 3

    Mangrove Interior

Move into the mangrove interior by boat. Kingfishers, mangrove warblers, and roosting frigatebirds are common. Your guide uses playback calls selectively to attract shy species.

  4. 4

    Barrier Island & Turtle Beach

Visit the outer barrier islands — nesting habitat for sea turtles (seasonal) and resting ground for pelicans, boobies, and terns. Crocodile sightings are frequent here.

  5. 5

    Species Debrief

Return to Puerto Parada for a full species debrief. Your guide compiles the day's list, answers questions, and shares conservation context for the species observed.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the best time of year for birding?

October to April is peak migration season when North American species winter in the bay. Year-round residents are always present. Sea turtle nesting peaks June to November.

Do I need to bring binoculars?

We provide high-power binoculars for all guests. If you have your own, bring them — personal binoculars are always more comfortable for extended use.

Is this suitable for non-birders?

Absolutely. Many guests come with no birding background and leave converted. Your guide is skilled at making wildlife accessible and exciting for all levels of experience.

Why 5:30 AM?

Bird activity peaks in the first two hours after dawn. By 9 AM many species retreat into the canopy. The early start is essential for the best experience — and the sunrise over the bay is worth it alone.
